Here at Sydney Packaging, we help a lot of customers source the right greaseproof paper for their business. From custom sizing to custom printing. We also field many questions about how it can be used and what makes it different from baking paper. In this blog, we unwrap (sorry, couldn’t help it 😊) a lot of common questions about greaseproof paper.
What is the difference between baking paper and greaseproof paper?
If you’re like most people, you’ll find the name ‘greaseproof paper’ a little deceiving. You probably want to know whether greaseproof paper is the same as the non-stick baking paper you’d place on an oven tray for cooking food. Well, the simple answer is, no. Non-stick baking paper is non-stick because it has a thin silicone coating to prevent your food from sticking to your oven tray or cake tins and is heat-resistant up to 220°C (200°C fan-forced). While greaseproof paper doesn’t have a silicone coating. So, technically, it’s grease resistant, not greaseproof. It can, however, be used to line trays and tins when baking, but, you will need to grease it on both sides to give it the same level of ‘non-stick’ as baking paper. Typically, greaseproof paper is heat-resistant up to about 200°C (180°C fan-forced).
There are so many uses for greaseproof paper
In addition to being grease resistant, greaseproof paper is non-toxic, and food-safe. It’s these reasons combined that make it a popular choice for packaging a variety of food items. Here are just a few ways we see it used by our customers:
- As a lining for paper board trays, snack packs, grazing boxes, food baskets, chip buckets, plates and even display cabinets.
- To hold foods together such as wraps, sandwiches, baguettes, burritos, gyros, pitas, and baguettes. The paper prevents fillings from spilling out and helps retain freshness.
- As a muffin or cupcake wrap or placed inside a cake box.
- An easy-clean table cover or placemat that is eco-friendly and biodegradable.
- Wrapping cutlery bundles.
- Making a cone for serving chips or wedges.
- Layering between frozen foods to prevent them from sticking together.
- Wrapping various types of non-food items such as candles, bath bombs or wine bottles to protect them during transport.
Cut to size to suit your needs
A full-size (also referred to as ‘full cut’) sheet of greaseproof paper is 28-30GSM, measures 660mm x 400mm, and is available in a ream of 500. However, the following sizes are also frequently used by our customers:
- Cut 1/2 – 400 x 330mm
- Cut 1/3 – 220 x 400mm
- Cut 1/4 – 200 x 330mm
- Cut 1/6 – 110 x 400mm
Alternatively, we can custom cut any size according to your requirements.
